The Carroll County String Project is the first stage of a new community school of the arts that opened in the fall of 2008. Dedicated to providing the highest quality of music instruction at the lowest possible cost, the school offers music instruction to students of every age, ability and background.

The Carroll County String Project was founded in 2007 by retired violin and viola teacher Margaret Motter Ward because of a shortage of highly-qualified string teachers in Carroll County. The String Project was designed to address several perceived problems in the County: 1) The shortage of qualified teachers for private study of string instruments; 2) The lack of a facility to train string teachers; 3) The lack of specific string instruction in the public schools where all instrumental music teachers were players of band instruments; and 4) The inability of Carroll County string students to compare favorably with string students from other counties in Maryland.

The String Project was introduced to Carroll County citizens as an invitation to anyone who wanted help on a string instrument to attend very inexpensive Sunday afternoon classes hosted by McDaniel College.  McDaniel College continued to offer space for the String Project into May of 2008. In October, 2008, the String Project resumed classes in a new facility located at Carroll County's regional airport where we remained through October, 2009.

The CCSP now has teachers at four locations in Carroll County:

  • St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 200 Main St., New Windsor, MD 21776
  • JAMS Music Store, 6400 Ridge Rd. at Carrolltown Plaza, Eldersburg, MD 21784
  • Robert Moton Elementary School, 1413 Washington Rd., Westminster, MD 21157
  • Office and Studio at 358 Greenbriar Close, Westminster, MD 21158
